| From Principal George Preparing for STAAR: A Guide for Families As we approach testing season, a common question from our 3rd–5th grade families is: "How can I help my student prepare for the STAAR test?" The transition to online testing has changed how students interact with the assessment. To support your child's confidence and performance, we recommend the following steps: 1. Connect with the Teacher Your student's teacher is the best resource for specific insights. They can identify particular "weaker areas" and provide tailored strategies or resources that align with what is happening in the classroom. 2. Practice with Digital Tools Since the STAAR is now fully online, it is vital that students are comfortable with the digital interface. We highly recommend having your student take a Practice Online Test at home. This allows them to: Navigate the digital platform. Practice using online tools (like the highlighter, notepad, and calculator). Experience the types of "new item" questions (drag-and-drop, multi-select, etc.) they will encounter.
How to Access Practice Tests from Home To get started, visit the Texas Assessment Practice Site and follow these steps: Preparation: Set aside at least 90 minutes for Math or 120 minutes for Reading. Provide your student with scratch paper and a pencil—even though the test is online, working out math problems or jotting down reading notes on paper is highly encouraged. Login: Click "Sign In" (you do not need a unique code for practice sets). Select Criteria: * Choose your student’s Grade Level. Select STAAR Practice Sets (avoid "TELPAS" unless your child is an emergent bilingual student). Select the 2023 or 2024 STAAR Practice Test (Reading or Math). Note: The 2022 versions are also excellent, but newer versions reflect the most current question types.
Accommodations: If you are unsure if your student receives specific accommodations (like Text-to-Speech), please leave these toggled OFF to see the standard version of the test. Review Results: Once the student submits the test, it will be scored automatically.
By practicing at home, you help turn the "unknown" of testing day into a familiar task.

| | Olympia's Leadership Ambassadors! If you come through our car line in the mornings, you will find these students ready to help get kiddos out of cars, and assist wherever needed such as breakfast in prek as well. Composed of students from our fourth and fifth grade. They volunteer and get to school early to help out. They have also been used as greeters for events, and we are training some to give tours to new students. Olympia loves the initiative, leadership, and responsibility these students show. Special thanks to Coach Seder for overseeing the implementation and scheduling of this group #oescreatingleaders #oesrainbowofpossibilities | | | Counselor Corner | Learning in Classroom CirclesMar 2nd- Mar13th Accepting Differences If you would like to reinforce the lessons on Accepting Differences we recommend 4 popular kids books that could lead to great discussions. These could also probably be found on utube as well Moo Bird by Milgrim, Spaghetti in a hot dog bun by Dismondy, Freckleface Strawberry by Moore, and Just the Way You are by Pfister. Some Sample Qs: All people look and act in different ways. Some are short, tall, loud, quiet, dark hair, glasses, or freckles. Every person is different and unique. Were the people/animal in the story being kind or not kind? In our class/home we celebrate differences so we use words and actions that make people feel good "Even if we are different on the outside, we all have a heart with feelings on the inside." -quote from the book spaghetti on a hot dog bun
The Goal: Students understand how it feels to be different and the goal is to have everyone feel included and respected despite when they might feel different. This includes when a student might forget to wear pajamas on pajama day or a certain color that was requested.
Summary: Our differences make us special Mar 16th-Mar 27th Breaking Bad Habits If you would like to reinforce the lessons on Breaking Bad Habits we recommend 4 popular kids books that could lead to great discussions. These could also probably be found on utube as well The berenstain bears and the bad habit by Berenstain, Ruby the Copycat by Rathman, Take Time to Relax by Carlson, and Too Many Pears by French. Some Sample Qs: When you do something over and over you form a habit, what happened over and over in the book? Was this a good habit or bad habit? To break bad habits we need to retrain our brain and we can help each other by pointing out when we do a bad habit
The Goal: Students understand what are the good and bad habits they have at school. Then work on them. Some of these habits have been addressed in other weeks such as raising hands and not blurting, and staying quiet in the halls.
Summary: We can break our bad Habits and build good ones | | | | Have a question, concern, or suggestion? Please submit it below, if you have the question others might also we frequently will put answers up for everyone to clear up any concerns or confusion.
